Kang Nam Korean Restaurant

Located on Currie St and nearby to Light Square is Kang Nam, a Korean restaurant that I would've missed entirely if I hadn't been invited there for a friend's birthday dinner. The restaurant's sign is tiny and although it's lit by neon undertones, the font doesn't attract the eye and you're more likely to walk pass it without noticing it at all.



The restaurant is located on the first floor so you have to climb a flight of stairs after you enter the dodgy looking building. Seriously, it's kind of badly lit and looks like an old, not very well maintained office building. I was almost unsure whether I had gotten the right place.



The interior of the restaurant put to rest my fears as it actually looks like a pretty decent place. The dark wood furniture and dim lighting helped to set the mood that this is actually a classier place than its exterior would lead you to believe. I couldn't help but notice that the restaurant was completely empty besides our table though; it's not a very popular place apparently.

The owner was extremely welcoming and helpful to our party. He informed us that they were used to doing parties and functions in Kang Nam and offered us this deal: for about $20 per person, we'd get 9 meat dishes (beef, pork and chicken) and 2 seafood hot pot (all to be divided amongst our long table).



We got spicy soup along with a selection of crab, squid, mussels, fish and prawns. The quantity was generous but I've had better quality hot pot elsewhere.



The pork dish, which I believe is called Jaeyook Bokum, was pretty tasty. It consisted of stir fried pork loins, onions, capsicum and mushrooms. Nothing too fancy, but delicious nonetheless.



The beef dish, the Bulgogi Bokum, was probably my favourite dish of the night. The fried slices of beef were tender and juicy and seasoned well. The accompanying vegetables complemented it.



I've totally forgotten the Korean name for this dish but it was a curry based one with chicken bone pieces. I love curry, and this didn't really do it for me. I was a bit underwhelmed by the flavours.

I'd say the food at Kang Nam is average at best but the owner did his best to make our night a good one; he even offered us a bottle of champagne for free. There's also a karaoke bar upstairs from the restaurant which he's also in charge of and he offered us a session at a discounted price. We felt very warmly received by the owner's generosity and service. I wouldn't mind coming back here for another meal; perhaps during lunch hour to grab one of their lunch specials at $10 - $15.
