On so many levels this place just shouldn't work, but my family think it's amazing. I'm a little on the fence as I'll explain later.

As you're driving north on the bypass through Sanur you'll find it on your left - the turning is near the JNE post shop. As you turn left there's a vacant lot on the right and that's the parking area, which is about 100 metres from the restaurant. Once parked continue down the road a little further and you'll find Kanda on your left.

At Kanda's heart, it's a restaurant. You can't take in your own food or drinks but there is an alcohol corkage fee of 150,000 IDR per bottle if needed. It offers a good range from snacks, Indonesian and western foods to coffees and desserts. Most meals are under 100,000 IDR and they cater for vegetarians. They also hold special events like a BBQ on the weekends from 12 noon until 19.00 with live music. There are plenty of seating options from long tables, bean bags and even inside airconditioned rooms. Upstairs you'll find even more dining areas with a natural breeze to keep you cool.

On the ground floor, there are two swimming pools. One smaller one for children that I would say is about 70 cm deep. It's nice as I normally sit on the edge and don't often have to get fully in with my toddler. The other pool is much deeper and bigger. Still more of a splash size pool but big enough to get a bit of swimming done. I always find eating and swimming a funny mix – but here it really works. One thing I've noticed is that I've never been able to find changing facilities. They do have bathrooms, with a shower in one, but not somewhere comfortable or roomy to change.

The final element to Kanda are the animals. When you first enter there are about 4 tanks full of fish and parrots on branches. Around the venue, you'll find birds like peacocks and ducks freely walking around. There have even been some rabbits from time to time. At the back and around the edge you'll also find cages with birds in and sometimes I have even seen reptiles. This is the part that doesn't sit well with me. The cage at the back never looks a good environment for all of the animals. I'm no expert but that's my thought. Some may also not enjoy the birds wandering around as I guess most of their wings will have had to be clipped (eg the parrots).

Overall, the food is good – some may say a little expensive when compared to other eat/swim venues (or beach clubs that actually have a beach part). The pools are nice and we enjoy them as a family. We also enjoy the bird that roams around 'freely' but can see why this would upset others.

If you've been to Kanda, what did you and your family think?
