When it comes to his country of origin and his family heritage, George Diakomichalis wears his heart on his sleeve.

George runs the popular award-winning Kalymnos Pastries, on Henley Beach Road at Torrensville. (The most recent award, Best Patisseries, Bakery, Dessert Bar in South Australia, sees him heading to Sydney in October to represent the state at National level.)

Kalymnos Pastries has been operating since 1995, but it has a long history – a hundred years of history, starting on the Greek island of Kalymnos, with George's great-grandfather, and it continues today.

George, of It's all Greek to me fame, cast aside a career in banking to focus on the 'sweeter' things in life. A stint with the family business in Kalymnos to hone his skills gave rise to his business. Cleverly, the very affable George has enhanced his business by conducting regular cooking classes, his recent television show, and regular food and hospitality tours to Kalymnos.

He has honed the structure of the tours since conducting the first in 2010. And, he has now added a short tour of five nights duration to the original ten night tour. (This can only be a teaser – five nights is nowhere near enough!)

The tour offers fabulous value and the itinerary is a wonderful balance of sightseeing and touring the spectacular island of Kalymnos, sampling the best of Greek cuisine, cooking demonstrations/instruction, sampling more fabulous food, meeting the family, sampling more fabulous food and absorbing the rich culture and generous hospitality of the island.

The business proprietors of Masouri (the village where George bases the tour) and the neighbouring island of Telendos do their utmost to welcome the tour participants and ensure a memorable stay.

In addition, there's ample free time in the itinerary for the classical Greek island holiday pursuits of sunning, sunset gazing, swimming, sampling an ouzo or two and creating a sizeable portfolio of stunning photographs.

Oh, and did I mention the food?

There are countless restaurants and unless you have a particular favourite, there's no need to use the same one twice!

George has just released the details for the 2019 tour. Contact him at Kalymnos Pastries to register your interest (by phone on 8443 9333 or at [email protected]). He will conduct an information session on Sunday 21 October.

My advice to you: if you're even half interested, register! If you're really keen, don't dilly-dally! I watched a tour fill up in about thirty minutes (good thing I was at the right end of the queue!).
