Weight loss and nightclubs: not two things you would normally associate.

Generally speaking when one goes out on the town you end up consuming many sugar/carbo-loaded drinks, balance it out by dancing up a storm, then ruining it all again by partaking in late-night takeaway like kebabs and pizza.

Kaliber nightclub in Fortitude Valley seems to have taken care of that.

You can visit this small nightclub, located in the Brunswick Street Mall, and be fairly confident that no matter what you wolf down in the wee hours, you'll still be a fair bit lighter than you were at say, 7pm.

What's the secret behind this?

First up, getting a drink can be a bit of a struggle. Being a small club with a surprisingly large dance floor means, there's always a queue; if that doesn't put you off then the prices ($8 for a Toohey's Extra Dry stubbie) will.

But as the man said in the ad, that's not all.

You see, the second reason you will lose weight during at night at Kaliber is the air-conditioning - or complete lack thereof. A number of wall-mounted industrial fans help keep the air circulating, but still don't quite bring the temperature back down below that of your average hot tub. When even the staff have their hair plastered against their foreheads, the best anti-perspirant isn't going to help.
Get yourself under one of these!

So expensive drinks and no air-con: why would you go to Kaliber?

The simple answer is the third reason you'll lose weight there; you are going to dance your night away.

All the retro hits from the 70s, 80s and 90s (with a touch of new stuff thrown in) will have you up on the dancefloor getting your groove on in a way that Zumba never could. While there we danced (and sang) to Queen's Don't Stop Me Now, Abba's Dancing Queen, The Bee Gees' Staying Alive and goodness knows what else.

I was there with a group of backpackers they absolutely loved the music before the heat got to them. But for those of us of a certain age and weight distribution, it might just be one of your best nights out.
