I'm a freelance writer based in Perth, Western Australia, who enjoys writing about the things I love: travel, nature-based activities, the arts, spirituality and creative, fun activities for children.
Support One Of Australia's Favourite Community Groups
Now that October has arrived, the warm weather has really started to kick in, accompanied by many wonderful fetes, fairs and festivals. Celebrating the advent of spring in one of Perth's most beautiful areas, the Perth Hills Spring Festival encompasses a fabulous assortment of fun things to see and do for people of all ages. With activities taking place each weekend throughout Kalamunda and its surrounds, there's sure to be something for everyone – whether you're into nature, the arts, fashion or sumptuous local produce. In conjunction with the festival, the Kalamunda CWA (one of the shire's most active community groups) is holding a few great events over October, and every Saturday there is something special planned at their Op Shop, located at 22 Central Road.

Although it's located within the Perth metropolitan area, Kalamunda still retains a charming semi-rural ambiance, and therefore it's not surprising that a thriving branch of the Country Women's Association is based there. The CWA Hall is situated in a peaceful shady spot behind the Dome Cafe, and its wonderful well-stocked opportunity shop is definitely one of Kalamunda's best-kept secrets. Although the shop is open for regular business throughout the week, during the Perth Hills Spring Festival special events will also be held on most Saturdays.
On Saturday, October 10th, there will be a wool swap – a not-to-be-missed event for both seasoned crafters and wannabes. Kalamunda and its surrounding locales are home to some of Perth's most talented fabric artists so this will be a terrific opportunity to get your hands on some top-quality yarns as well as enjoy demonstrations by some of the local artisans in traditional country crafts such as quilting, knitting, lace-making, card-making and much more. If you've been caught up in the current craze for handmade wares and traditional crafts, this is definitely somewhere you should pop in and check out for an hour or so. Delicious Devonshire teas are also available if you're craving some refreshments.
One week later, on Saturday October 17th, the Op Shop will be hosting a fabulous half-price sale with prices on everything slashed dramatically. When I visited the store a couple of months ago I was extremely impressed with the quality of the items for sale, so this is a great place to head for, if you're looking for good-value, and wares that are a cut above the usual op-shop offerings.
Finally, on Saturday October 24th, Kalamunda CWA will host its annual Spring Op Shop Parade. Specially created to appeal to both the young and the young-at-heart it will showcase some of the fashions that are currently in the store, as well as highlighting the importance of recycling and reusing our unwanted possessions. Over the years the parade has become a popular event in Kalamunda with visitors coming from all over the greater metro area. The big day will also feature a performance by the local CWA choir as well as a presentation by a guest speaker who will discuss the topic – 'Young Women in CWA Today'. Not to mention, loads of wonderful bargains in the op shop, and the opportunity to snack out on some yummy Devonshire teas.
In a nutshell, if you're a country girl at heart and hanker for a visit to the Perth Hills during the beautiful spring weather, why not coincide your visit with one of the special events that will be held by the Kalamunda CWA, in conjunction with the Perth Hills Spring Festival. The Country Women's Association is one of Australia's most well-respected community organisations with a proud history dating back over 90 years, and these events enable us to support all the good work that they do, as well as have some fun and bag some great bargains.
