South Australia hosts a market, known as the Original Open Market, down south in an area called Christies Beach. This little market has the beginnings of a travel smorgasbord that not only is a browse worthy destination every first and third Sunday from 8am to 1pm but also has the ability to tempt your sweet tooth with Kai's Cupcakes.
Vanilla, Oreo, Nutella, Yum
The little cupcake stand is quietly clean and crisp and filled with perfectly decorated cupcakes in a variety of flavours. At first glance you might be conditioned to assume these little wonders are like any other cupcake you've had. But once you bite into one of the tasty treats and that butter cream icing and real homemade cake dances across your tongue, you'll know the ingredients are real and not the fake oil-filled imitation ones out there. You'll know you've discovered a little bit of the good' ole baking days where the wholesome ingredients your Nan might have used are poured into the batter to create a mouth watering delight.
Kai is actually the name of the owner, Rachel Castle's, little boy, and she has a dream that this business just might flourish enough that someday Kai will be able to keep it in the family and be running it himself.
Growing up Rachel was raised by a single mum and learned quickly the merits of good cooking. Always the one that family and friends came to for that special cake or desert Rachel finally decided to turn her passion into a business and so her life of being a mum and juggling baby quality time with baking and taste testers and experiments in her newly adapted kitchen began.
Rachel will tell you she is still experimenting. I've heard about her unicorn cupcakes and even the freak cupcake she is working on. I have tried a new orange chocolate cupcake she created upon request (it was sensational) and I am already looking forward to buying a box of her "butter cream cake in a jar" creations for a camping trip.
Kai's Cupcakes have been the highlight at many birthdays, weddings and even engagements and baby showers. Rachel is able to personalize the cup cakes and even put a company logo atop the iced flavour treat.
It's a Kai's Cupcake Sandwich
It's a tough go, though, being a mum of a very active little boy and trying to run a business. Markets in the area are her place to showcase and introduce people to her little divine cakes and I'd have to agree with her when she says we need more markets down south in Christies Beach and Port Noarlunga.
So if you are looking for a weekend trip or just on your way to McLaren Vale stop in at Christies Beach at the Original Open Market the first and third Sunday of the month from 8am to 1pm. Its on Beach road Christies Beach. Check out all the goods from the plants and antiques or random tools on offer at the variety of stalls and don't forget to grab a Kai's Cupcake (or 6) and tour around before you hit the beach down the road or the wineries just yonder.
Don't go too far straight away, though, because as you taste your new Kai's cupcake you will begin to slow in your step and begin to negotiate with yourself about the valid reasons for going and buying a dozen more of the little things.
The Christies Beach Original Open Market isn't only home to Kai's Cupcakes. There are other snacks and treats to enjoy including hot drinks. Kai's Cupcakes can be pre-ordered, or picked up at the Morphett Vale location.
