The Locals Call it "The Bun"

"You will never ever know, if you never ever go" is something that I often say to myself and others about travelling.

This last weekend I went camping (well, I stayed in a cabin), out west of Brisbane with some other wonderful ladies. A story for another time.

I set off from Caboolture and headed west along the D'Aguilar Highway to Yarraman, then onto the New England Highway to the Dalby turnoff near Wutul.

Just before Dalby, I reached the fascinating little town of Kaimkillenbun. I'd never heard of it and I wonder why because there are some good stories associated with the area.

The Bun Pub

It has the distinction of being the Queensland town with the longest single name. The name is from the local aboriginals and means something about the rim of the moon coming over the horizon.

The town, (you can call it 'The Bun' just as the locals do) was where World War I soldiers spent their last night, at the pub no doubt, before they departed for overseas service.

Kaimkillenbun also has another claim to fame Nicole Kidman was in a mini-series filmed in 1983 there. It was called "Chase Through the Night." You wouldn't recognise Nicole perhaps, but you can find some shorts on YouTube.

There's a lot of history to explore there including a great war memorial and park, and some old churches that appear to be abandoned.

The Pub is known for its cheap beer and good food and low-cost accommodation but I cannot vouch for that. I am also told that the men who left The Bun for the War left their signatures on the wall at the Pub. That's perhaps worth seeing too.

There's also a wonderful collection of old trucks around the Pub. It's not far from the mountain of Square Top, where minerals including opals can be found.

As well, there is a caravan park too, for those who are travelling in a van or motorhome.

So, if you are headed out Dalby way, why not take the time to visit The Bun, drive around and visit the Pub and see the vintage vehicles. It's a far cry from modern city living!
