Sometimes you have a hunch to go somewhere and on this occasion it was at Newtown, and a strong craving for Japanese food was called for. Kai on King has a special lunch promotion where if you eat any three plates from their sushi train, your fourth plate is for free. The cheapest plate out of the four different plates chosen is your freebie on this occasion. This is exactly what I did, and it was worth the experience. This promotion is only available from Tuesday to Friday between Midday to 3pm.

The service does come across as a little cold at first, however it does get better upon leaving the restaurant. Kai on King is a quieter sushi train, not one of those Japanese sushi trains where you literally have to use the law of attraction to a) not wait too long in the first place, and b) get a good (not a squishy) seat. You will be lucky to get a friendly welcome at this establishment, however thankfully you are not forced to sit at a seat along the train in which you do not want to sit down at. Hooray - you can sit anywhere and then you are settled for a really fantastic feed.

The sushi is fresh, flavoursome and rather delicious. The food is worth it. Despite the serving sizes looking rather smallish, do not be fooled - the smallest looking dishes were often the most filling.

First up, the Soft Shell Crab ($4.90) got me into the spirit of Japanese food. The crab felt boney and a bit tasteless, however the special sauce was just tangy and delightful in addition to the fresh tasting sushi that came with this dish.

Then I was in the mood for some raw salmon and avocado sushi ($3.90) and I was not disappointed. Beautiful chunks of raw fish and the avocado was creamy and tasted just right. Kai on King has definitely hit the spot on freshness once again. Yippee.

Time to go vegetarian, and the difficulty was in deciding whether or not to grab the eggplant or the pumpkin sushi roll. Eggplant ($2.90) won on this occasion. This was a real wow. The eggplant was juicy, moist and rather tasty, and it is easy to feel like a healthy fix afterwards. Quite rare to find quality vegetarian sushi rolls at a sushi train. This ended up being my freebie dish as per the four dish rule.

Last but not least, the chocolate cravings came alive and caused me to pick up the Chocolate Mousse ($3.90) instead of opting for a healthier green tea dessert alternative. Hands down, this dish was easily one of Sydney's best chocolate mousses ever tasted to date.

It was interesting to see the beautiful Japanese arts and crafts available for sale when I paid the bill. This is when the service became friendlier. Thank you very much Kai on King, I will be back for more sometime soon.
