Like many Queensland Towns in the early Colony years and especially those towns with thriving ports such as Maryborough, numerous immigrant ships transporting much needed labour from England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, and Scandinavia arrived on our shores to assist in the development of the new settlements. This is noted in the many family surnames of German heritage known in the town.
Situated at 153 Adelaide Street opposite the RSL is "
Kaffee Margret German Café". Owner/cook Margret Issel wanted something to do after retirement so decided to open an authentic German Café to offer something different.
The café has a variety of sweet and savoury German foods from Leberkase to currywurst to homemade German tortes and cheesecakes. Along with breakfast and lunch choices, Kaffee Margret also stocks a range of German grocery items for purchase.

Seating in the café is restricted to approximately 15 at one time; however on the day I dined, many patrons were purchasing take-away rather than having the time to be seated.
Kaffee Margret is open from 7am to 4pm weekdays and 8am to 12 Noon on Saturdays. A continental breakfast can be purchased for $5.00 with lunches also starting around the $5.00 mark.
