Authentic Teppanyaki Japanese cuisine in the heart of Brisbane City... enough said. The Stamford Plaza's Kabuki restaurant lit up my Saturday night, both literally and figuratively. I was unprepared for what was an interactive flare of Teppanyaki entertainment, igniting my taste buds with genuine Japanese flavours. Seated a foot from the grill in a lively and filled restaurant, my meal preparation soon became up close and personal. The private specialist chef for our grill welcomed my partner and I with an extravagant display of knives, flags and flames, giving us a mere taste for what was to come.

I chose the Boton, a popular Teppanyaki dinner choice at Kabuki, beginning our banquet with the delectable entrees of salad and Miso soup. While enjoying Japan's traditional soup, our chef began his display of true culinary aptitude, creating a visually enticing performance in the preparation of each meal. I was reluctant to blink and risk missing the chef whisking his knife as he swiftly beheaded our large King prawns and sliced our fresh Tasmanian Atlantic Salmon. Delicate and delicious, the exquisite seafood was enriched with each sauce option.

I soon understood that this meal was not for the faint hearted. Up next on the menu was Black Angus beef fillets. What was previously a calm ambience surrounding the room transformed into a sizzling blaze of flames as our steak was cooked on a bonfire before us. Fire reflected in the eyes of each onlooker, all equally amazed and eager to try our next course.

Harmlessly lying on the grill were the tail ends of the prawn bodies we had devoured earlier. Unbeknownst to us, they were a component of our next meal! Delicate and moist teriyaki chicken breast was juxtaposed with, what is to-date, the most adventurous food item I have consumed. Fried legs and all, my view on prawns had completely altered as I ate the surprisingly crunchy delight of the prawns' tail end with the softly textured chicken breast.

Instructed by the chef to put on bibs, we knew the night was far from over. After securely protecting our clothing, what began was the ultimate test of coordination. Eyes wide and hands open, I managed to successively catch a bowl and a raw egg thrown to me by the chef! Narrowly escaping embarrassment, I thought the hardest part was over. My mouth was watering as spices and ingredients were being added to the fried rice and vegetables, now sizzling away on the grill. As I reached out to accept my bowl filled with fried rice, the chef pulled back slightly, signalling for me to catch it. My partner and I laughed at the absurdity of the suggestion, only to realise he was serious. Luck was on our side as we both managed to catch a bowl, spiralling towards us and filled with rice!

Falling back into our chairs, stomachs filled and tastebuds content, we reminisced over the excitement of our dinner experience. We finished our night out at Kabuki with fresh fruit for dessert, unable to consumer much more. The ultimate Stamford Plaza experience had to conclude with a stunning night stroll across the Brisbane River Boardwalk and a peek inside the City Botanic Gardens; a tranquil end to a night of excitement.
