Melbourne really does need to be renamed Melband. The music scene is alive and kicking and there's no shortage of up and coming artists.
Junior under the Moon are one such outfit. Comprised of Jay Jnr, Rob Jnr, Lee Jnr, Duncan Jnr and Evan Jnr – yah huh, there's a pattern there – the Indie-Pop-Folk-Jazz quintet are debuting their EP at The Toff on Sat 13 June.
My Head at 3am is the appropriately named album and with doors opening at 7:30pm.
Be sure to head down to catch the crew. It will be moody, it will be haunting, and it will be moving … it will. Jay Jnr spilled the beans on the latest antics and what exactly the band gets up to.
Okay, first things first – your label is Pie-Face Records. Without a shadow of a doubt, you have to be Boosh fans. Did you see Noel when he was in Melbourne?! Onto serious matters though, you've been around since 2012 – how did the band form, how do you all know each other etc …
We're massive Boosh fans of course; we've enforced a strict 'skinny legs' policy in the band. We didn't catch Noel in Melbourne, but Rob Junior is from England and saw the Boosh live a couple of times. He wears his Crack Fox t-shirt with great pride.
We could talk about Boosh all day, but we should probably discuss the band:
Jay Junior gave birth to Junior Under the Moon in the winter of 2012. It was originally intended as a solo project, but Jay got bored of jamming with himself so decided to hunt for new family members. It was 3am on an ice cold Sunday morning, when he found Rob Junior tucked behind the dumpster of The Paris Cat Jazz Club, wrapped in a banana leaf.
Rob was a failed Jazz guitarist who travelled from the slums of England to try and make his mark in Melbourne. He had the soul of Kenny Rodgers, but only knew one guitar chord. The two immediately became brothers as they wrote and performed as a duo throughout 2013.
Junior Under the Moon expanded the family in 2014 by adding members Lee Junior (stolen pop princess) and Duncan Junior (ex Greenvale sanatorium patient).
You're launching 'My Head at 3am' at The Toff in about oh, two weeks … what is the sentiment in the band, excited, nervous, good reception from punters …?
I can see you've been doing a few gigs at the Workers Club etc, how has it all been going so far?
We are "over the moon" about the E.P Launch, we have had a great response so far. Our friends from "The Valley Ends" are playing, who are going to blow minds and the very talented (and good looking) Harry Brown will be opening. Can't wait to howl with the crowd and get all dirty!
We keep forgetting we actually have to play and it's not just a crazy party to celebrate the fact that we're actually getting things done in the band.
When the band is not moonlighting as Junior Under the Moon, what does everyone do?
We play in a tribute band called Junior Over the Moon, doing covers of our own material. Surprisingly it pays much better than our main band, so we're thinking about doing the tribute thing full time. It worked pretty well for Fleetwood Mac.
We wanted to share a couple of songs before they were polished and printed.
Have Rob Jnrs walrus impressions helped or hindered the sales of the EP?
Other than the launch and promoting the current EP, what does the rest of 2015 hold?
Haha, you've obviously been browsing our Instagram account. Actually Rob is now permanently a Walrus, like Justin Long in the movie Tusk.
Lee and Rob Junior are getting married in July. We don't even know if this is legal in Australia, them being family by soul and all.
To top things off Jay Junior is going to be the celebrant.
As for Junior Under the Moon's plans in 2015, not sure on that one; hopefully it involves getting paid because we have about 5 dollars (collectively) to our name.
Rob is also hoping to double his musical vocabulary and learn another chord.
