Relax in a green oasis, minutes from the ocean

In order to explore the Akaka Falls and Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, a good base is Hilo, a charming city with a completely different vibe to the touristy Kona region, or if you want to take a few days to unwind, head to the tiny town of Pahoa, just 30 minutes south of Hilo, and forty five minutes from the Volcano.

This little town sprang to world attention late last year when the lava threatened homes and businesses as it made it's way down the island. You can see where it finally stopped, earlier this year.

The Jungle Farmhouse is a cosy three bedroom cottage on a working rainforest farm. Offering the comforts of space and both indoor and outdoor dining areas, it's a great base for those travelling with kids or in a group.

The hosts filled the kitchen with fresh eggs and home grown bananas, and the kitchen had plenty of staples on hand too. There's a lot of thoughtful touches that make your stay pleasant.

They also provided beach towels, eskies and beach chairs, for day trips and a washing machine for you to catch up on laundry.

Less than ten minutes away is the lava heated pool, and slightly further on, the Star of the Sea Painted Church and the Steam vents, it's a great base for a few days to unwind.

Prices start at A$203 a night (taxes included) and there is no resort fee or parking costs. Bookings can be made here.

So allow yourself a few days to see a different side of the Big Island, and recharge in the green oasis that is the Jungle Farmhouse.
