Off to a Flying Start
The City of Boorondara is running a 'Summer Music Series', featuring three very different musical events. The first, 'Jazz at Canterbury Gardens', was unfortunately cancelled because of the extreme heat earlier this month. We decided to visit the second, 'Juncyard Jam', over the weekend. One aspect of this event that added interest was the venue - it was held at the Junction Skate & BMX Park, in Riversdale Road, Hawthorn East.
The promotional material for the event promised that 'one of the most prominent hip-hop DJs around, Mz Rizk' would be 'spinning beats at the turntables'. Based on this, we were expecting a strong music focus. But alas Mz Rizk was receiving little attention (or at least during the time we were there) because all eyes were on the amazing feats taking place on the skateboard/BMX arena. We were fortunate to arrive just as competitions were starting; first the Ramshackle Crew skateboarders, and then the BMX riders. Some of the stunts were breathtaking and a testament to the strength, skill and dexterity of the riders.
The BMX riders were more spectacular than the skateboarders, perhaps because of the extra height they can gain with their bikes. We were treated to one rider performing a somersault with the bike, an amazing feat.
After the competitions had finished, and the arena had been re-opened to all comers, we wandered down to the back of the skate park, where Ms Rizk was still doing her thing, and sat in one of the comfy couches that had been thoughtfully provided by the Council. Within seconds we were snapped by the City of Boorondara photographer, who said, 'I've been waiting all day for someone to sit in those seats'.
