A laneway location, theatrical bar, and custom-built oven hailing from Naples. An extensive wine list, attentive staff, waiters with Italian accents. Wood-fired pizzas, just-baked bread, sophisticated salads and
dolci to die for. What's not to like about
Julius Pizzeria in South Brisbane?
Wedged on the corner of Fish Lane and Grey Street,
Julius Pizzeria's ultra-modern industrial-style interior provides an interesting counterpoint to its
traditional Italian menu . As the name suggests, it does authentic pizza with a passion - offering diners a choice of deliciously thin
rosse and
bianche bases and imaginative topping combinations. To be completely clear: don't come here looking for a deep pan pizza or a sausage stuffed crust; and be assured the
Salsiccia pizza, with tomato, chilli, mozzarella, provolone, pork and fennel sausage and rocket leaves, is about as close as you'll get to a meatlovers pizza. (Amen to that.)
There are plenty of options at
Julius Pizzeria for those who don't feel like eating pizza.
Antipasti (starters) includes
Polenta Fritta (fried polenta with grilled zucchini, whipped buffalo mozzarella, chilli and oregano and
Carpaccio di Pesce (thinly sliced ocean trout with radish, anchovy dressing and frisee lettuce).
Secondi (mains) range from
Costoletta di Maiale (pork cutlet on the bone wrapped in pancetta with roasted cauliflower, peppers and crème fraîche;
Vitello in Padella (pan seared veal backstrap with eggplant parmigiana and red wine jus) and a range of daily specials. My dining companion enjoyed a duck ragu. The descriptor she used was 'divine'.
For me it was the
dolci which really sealed the deal. It was, of course, difficult to choose, among a host of possibilities like
Budino alla Nocciola (chocolate and hazelnut pudding with masala icecream),
Pannacotta (vanilla bean pannacotta with poached pears and crushed gingernut biscuits) and
Mascarpone e frutti di bosco (sweet pizza with berries and mascarpone). It was only after seeing a fellow diner's dessert arrive that I decided I had to have what she was having. That was,
Frittelle di Ricotta - the lightest, doughnut-like fried ricotta and goats cheese dumplings with orange syrup and vanilla bean ice-cream. Heaven in a bowl.
The
Julius Pizzeria atmosphere is sophisticated without being snooty; and family-friendly without being animal-farmlike. On the day we visited, many families were there, with small children in tow, enjoying Sunday lunch. One major for this is likely the outstanding Bambini menu options - such as
Reginella (tomato and fiore di latte) and
Cotto (tomato, mozzarella and ham) pizzas, a range of different pasta meals, and chocolate sauce on desserts the only concession to childhood palates.
