A sweet and charming film with a refreshing twist
Juliet, Naked
Rose Byrne, Chris O'Dowd and Ethan Hawke star in Juliet, Naked

Juliet, Naked is a 2018 romantic comedy film about a woman named Annie (Rose Byrne), who has spent the last fifteen years of her life in a relationship with a man named Duncan (Chris O'Dowd), who is an obsessed music fan of an indie rock legend called Tucker Crowe (Ethan Hawke). Crowe had a brief career in music during the 90s, where he released just one album, called 'Juliet'. The CD released at number 44 on the charts and was not very successful. Not long after its release, Crowe disappeared from the public eye halfway through a set he was performing in a local pub without any explanation. He hasn't been seen for 25 years.

Juliet, Naked
Annie (Byrne) is stuck in a long term relationship with Duncan (O'Dowd), who is an obsessed music fan of rock star Tucker Crowe (Hawke).

In 2018, Tucker Crowe has been largely forgotten, except by a small group of fans who worship him as a cult figure of indie rock. Duncan runs a blog about him where he discusses his musical legacy and comments on rumours about his personal life and possible sightings of the long-lost rock god. He lives with his girlfriend Annie who runs a local museum. The two of them have a comfortable life together, but tensions are beginning to brew between them. Annie has been tolerant of Duncan's obsession with Crowe for years, but lately, her patience has started to grow thin because it has become more and more clear to her that he cares more about his idol than he does about her.

Duncan is largely oblivious to his girlfriend's growing frustration with him because he barely spends any time with her. He has turned a spare room in their house into a shrine devoted to Crowe, which he has decorated with concert posters, magazine posters and newspaper clippings about him. He also collects copies of 'Juliet' which he thinks is the best album ever. Duncan thinks Tucker Crowe could do no wrong, but Annie can barely stand him.

One day, a package arrives in the mail addressed to Duncan. It is a CD labelled 'Juliet, Naked' and it contains original demos from 'Juliet' which the elusive Tucker Crowe has sent to Duncan himself. Annie opens the package first and listens to the whole CD before her boyfriend gets home, which angers him. Duncan falls rapturously in love with 'Juliet, Naked' and posts a glowing review on his website, which irritates Annie so much she decides to write a review of her own and posts it online as well. Her review is a negative one and loaded with resentment directed toward her boyfriend. Duncan is so put off by her criticisms he starts to question if he can remain in a relationship with someone who isn't a fan of Crowe.

Annie's review attracts the attention of Crowe himself, who reaches out by email and tells her that he agrees with her criticisms. The two of them begin a correspondence over email without Duncan's knowledge. Annie and Crowe open up about their lives and admit to having regrets about how their lives have turned out. Annie feels like she hasn't achieved much with her life, and Crowe thinks of himself as a screw-up. The two of them couldn't be from more different worlds, but there is something between them, and over time a friendship starts to form.

While this is happening, Duncan meets a woman at work who shares his love for Tucker Crowe, and the two begin an affair. When Annie finds out, she dumps Duncan and decides to meet Crowe in person.

Juliet, Naked was directed by American TV and film director Jessie Peretz and was based off Nick Hornby's novel of the same name. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 19 2018. It will be released at Luna Leederville Cinema on Thursday, September 20 2018.

Juliet, Naked is a fun film about three people who are well into middle age who have made complete messes out of their lives. The movie was a little slow in some parts, but had some good writing and performances in it and ended on a surprisingly feminist note.

Why? Annie is stuck in a long term relationship with a boyfriend who is more devoted to his music idol, Tucker Crowe, then he is to her. After Annie pens a bad review of Crowe’s new album, he reaches out to her online and the two begin a romance.
