I am an avid traveller who always ends up in the most unique and interesting places.
Published November 21st 2012

Juicy Beans on the Beach, situated underneath Merewether Surf Club, is a contemporary beachside cafe set on the majestic Merewether Beach.

It is the only location in Newcastle that serves world-class coffee while your toes scrunch on the sand on the sidewalk, metres from the water. The recently renovated venue is decked out with a rustic wooden finish and there is a clean sparkle to the interior that only a new cafe can possess. At the counter I was distracted by the mouth watering aroma of coffee and fresh muffins, of which I ordered both. The staff are vibrant and enthusiastic, nothing seems too much trouble for them, smiles plastered on their faces; the barista greets everyone with a 'Welcome to Paradise!' from behind the coffee machine which overlooks the ocean. This might just be the best place in the world to work.

Taking a seat on the wooden crates used for seating, i sit under an umbrella and soak up the atmosphere. Under the surf club sit the locals, hunched over their steaming coffee, staring out at the ocean, apparently oblivious to hustle and bustle about them. Around me a plethora of people congregate at their new found watering hole; avid exercisers and not so avid exercisers, mothers and toddlers, retirees and much to my delight, wetsuit clad surfers seeking a caffeine hit before a surf.

My coffee and muffin arrives, delivered by a smiley waitress, dressed in short denim shorts that show off her well tanned legs that stop at her ears. The Italian coffee I ordered was smooth and strong perfect, and the hazelnut and espresso muffin compliments the coffee with a touch of sweetness. My bleary eyes were so enlivened by a mixture of strong coffee, a sweet treat and sea spray.

I was fortunate enough to visit the cafe on the first Sunday in November which proved an extra special treat as every first Sunday of every month; some of the best young surfers in Newcastle converge on Merewether Beach to compete in monthly surf competitions. So while sipping my coffee, I was able to watch some of Newcastle best surfers fight it out (right in front of me no binoculars required) for the glory of being named this month's champion. I could definitely think of worse things to do on a Sunday morning.

I for one will definitely be coming back to soak up some sun, drink some superb coffee and admire the view. One can only help but wonder what a gold mine this place will be for next year's Surfest.

Did we visit the same place? The location and coffee are excellent but the staff seemed miserable and the service was seriously lacking on both of the occasions that I have visited.

Thank you Katie and Mark for posting the following on our Facebook page:
Hi guys,
Whilst visiting Juicy Beans on the Beach the other day we were greeted with the ever happy attentive service and great coffee and thick-shakes, whilst enjoying the view etc myself and husband were again very impressed with the customer service which on this occasion seemed just that little bit more special we thought we'd elderly gentleman was greeted at the counter and introduced by name to the Barista who then asked his name and said how very welcome he was, the gentleman ordered his coffee etc and slowly returned to his seating....upon noticing that the gentleman may be more comfortable on a chair rather than the nice wooden seating, the barista promptly asked one of the staff members to ask him if he was comfortable and if he would prefer alternative seating. (The gentleman was happy to sit on the wooden seating). By name the barista called that his order was ready but straight away kindly offered to the elderly gentleman to remain seated and a staff member would bring his coffee over! Now some may not have noticed but from the point of a customer, we felt this was doing that little bit extra for somebody to enjoy their experience whilst being at Juicy Beans Cafe and Merewether Beach. May I add this great customer service came effortlessly and nothing seemed too much trouble :-) well done! at Juicy Beans on the Beach.

The service at this place is always exceptional. I used to be a fairly regular visitor, a few times a week, but for some time now I have rarely been able to visit. I dropped by today and PJ had my latte ready in less than a minute. In fact it was so fast I'm sure he'd started on it before I made my order, because I always order the same thing. I'm glad that I am remembered there - that put a smile on my face.
