Juicy Beans on the Beach, situated underneath Merewether Surf Club, is a contemporary beachside cafe set on the majestic Merewether Beach.

It is the only location in Newcastle that serves world-class coffee while your toes scrunch on the sand on the sidewalk, metres from the water. The recently renovated venue is decked out with a rustic wooden finish and there is a clean sparkle to the interior that only a new cafe can possess. At the counter I was distracted by the mouth watering aroma of coffee and fresh muffins, of which I ordered both. The staff are vibrant and enthusiastic, nothing seems too much trouble for them, smiles plastered on their faces; the barista greets everyone with a 'Welcome to Paradise!' from behind the coffee machine which overlooks the ocean. This might just be the best place in the world to work.

Taking a seat on the wooden crates used for seating, i sit under an umbrella and soak up the atmosphere. Under the surf club sit the locals, hunched over their steaming coffee, staring out at the ocean, apparently oblivious to hustle and bustle about them. Around me a plethora of people congregate at their new found watering hole; avid exercisers and not so avid exercisers, mothers and toddlers, retirees and much to my delight, wetsuit clad surfers seeking a caffeine hit before a surf.

My coffee and muffin arrives, delivered by a smiley waitress, dressed in short denim shorts that show off her well tanned legs that stop at her ears. The Italian coffee I ordered was smooth and strong – perfect, and the hazelnut and espresso muffin compliments the coffee with a touch of sweetness. My bleary eyes were so enlivened by a mixture of strong coffee, a sweet treat and sea spray.

I was fortunate enough to visit the cafe on the first Sunday in November which proved an extra special treat as every first Sunday of every month; some of the best young surfers in Newcastle converge on Merewether Beach to compete in monthly surf competitions. So while sipping my coffee, I was able to watch some of Newcastle best surfers fight it out (right in front of me – no binoculars required) for the glory of being named this month's champion. I could definitely think of worse things to do on a Sunday morning.

I for one will definitely be coming back to soak up some sun, drink some superb coffee and admire the view. One can only help but wonder what a gold mine this place will be for next year's Surfest.
