As if mid-life crises and menopause aren't tricky enough to contend with in normal times, along comes COVID, depriving us of distractions such as boozy lunches with friends, shopping sprees at the mall, trips to the beautician, and even work. And while some welcomed the opportunity to stay in bed and drink their way through lockdown, Aussie icons Judith Lucy and Denise Scott spent the time in lengthy lament considering the meaning of life during these confronting times.
Live stand up comedy is back and Still Here is a candid and often chaotic conversation between two female friends navigating middle-age and what life in lockdown was really like. It looks at the big issues and how they were exactly the same for iconic Lucy and Scott as they were us mere mortals. Profound questions like how much can I eat in a day? Am I developing a drinking habit? Where did I leave my bra? Where will hair sprout next? Lockdown was one big time warp where wine bottles accumulated, sleepless nights were punctuated with gin & tonic and bodily hair was given free rein to grow wild.
It was a time where online shopping made us buy things we didn't need and, by the time they arrived with the postman, they didn't fit. Hair removal device sales hit an all time high. It was a time to take stock of life and book that overdue colonoscopy. It was a time of exhaustion as we preoccupied ourselves waiting for the daily case numbers so we had something to talk about on the endless zoom catchups. It was a time when we were deprived of social connection and resorted to imagined romantic liaisons with our chief medical and health officers who were the only ones who came into our homes each day.
Still Here could have been a reminder of something we want to forget, but the wit, wisdom and inimitable wackiness that Lucy and Scott possess, deliver a big belly laugh that reverberates around the auditorium as the stories and exasperation resonate with the audience.
Winner of People's Choice Award at the Melbourne Comedy Festival, Still Here is just the tonic (with a touch of gin) that we need right now as we emerge from the long lockdown and learn to live in the new normal.
With packed houses and rave reviews around Australia, Still Here continues its hilarious march around the country, heading to Newcastle, Hobart, Perth and Townsville.
