Do you write poetry? Perhaps you've written one or two poems, but they rest in a dark drawer? Or perhaps you'd like to try writing poetry and you don't know quite where to begin.
Local award-winning poet Jude Aquilina is conducting a poetry workshop for all levels of experience, whether you are published, unpublished or you are a beginner, at East Avenue Books on Sunday October 20 from 2.00 - 4.00 pm.

I attended Jude's recent Poetry Workshop at The Langhorne Creek Writers' Festival, where I gained better understanding of today's poetry while we had fun with words as we explored different techniques in generating ideas and practising different writing exercises.

What I enjoyed most, was exploring and creating the seeds for writing free verse poetry. This technique I find opens up my mind for creating descriptive passages without being frustrated because my lines don't rhyme. I also find practising free verse, becomes a useful means of stimulating and generating ideas for writing short stories.

Jude shared this poem by the late Indigenous Australian Poet, Bill Neidje, from his book Story About Feeling, Published by Magabala Books.

%%That tree now, feeling...
e blow...
sit quiet, you speaking...
that tree now e speak...
that wind e blow...
...
Listen carefully, careful
and this spirit e come in your feeling
and you will feel it... anyone that.
I feel it... my body same as you.%%

This free verse was created by a poet, who was unable to read or write. While maintaining the cadence of open and sincere language his poems preserve wholeheartedly the Aboriginal culture.

So come along and have some fun too, and allow your creative side to have clear open reign for an afternoon of poetic pleasure and word-smithing. You could find how easy it is to discover, how anyone can write poetry.
