Ju Raku En – Japanese Garden

If you are visiting Toowoomba, one place you must go to is the Japanese Garden on the campus of the University of Southern Queensland.

This garden is a joint venture between the University and the Toowoomba City Council, which was opened in 1989, and as a young garden is a "work in progress" as many such traditional gardens in Japan are many more years old.

Ju Raku En - "roughly translated means to enjoy peace and longevity in a public place." – is open daily from around 7 am until dusk, and there is no charge to enter. It is suitable for all ages and especially accessible for wheelchairs.

It is one of the largest traditional Japanese Gardens in Australia, and you will find it at Regent St, Darling Heights, Toowoomba. It is a delightful place for a stroll or to sit and ponder, and enjoy the tranquillity.

The lakes are beautiful with a range of birds from ducks, geese, swans, and other birds which enjoy the bread thrown to them by excited children. The gardens are especially beautiful in spring – and are one of the gardens visited by many during the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers as the flowers are in full bloom.

There are three kilometres of paths, 230 species of Japanese and Australian native trees, lawns, lakes, streams and waterfalls, with many rocks which are always a feature of Japanese Gardens.

Are you a photographer? Artist? Poet? There are many beautiful scenes for all to enjoy – as it is a popular site for photographers and artists to work.

It is also a popular wedding venue – but you will need to contact 1800 331 155 to make arrangements for that special day.
