What a massive introduction to the magnificence of
Joys Njambi, the
songstress leading her
Live Band Show on the
10th of August just gone for one night only at
The Fyrfly , hidden away in the depths of the
Newmarket Hotel at
34 Inkerman St, St Kilda.
Unassuming in the dark, the venue is a surprise if you've never been there. It's spacious, warm and ambient with a bar and restaurant upstairs, warmly lit, and with a stairway to music heaven going downstairs. A well set up venue for
live gigs, check the
list of future gigs upcoming at
The Fyrefly .
Joys Njambi and her 10 piece sound system fill the not so little stage to capacity. Accompanied by backup vocals from
JAYDEAN ;
Jacinta Elarmaly ; and
Shobana Maree , the vocals are plumped and primed, only to be filled further by the engaging dance movements of
Karen Bravo .
Mesmerising to watch, Karen is dressed in gold with fluid movements; she's at one with every beat of the music. Each one holding their own, filled with talent and charisma, this is African Roots, Gospel, Acid Jazz, Urban and Classic Soul performed by the powerhouse that is the
JoysSoul Music Live Band Show with a lineup of horns (trombone, sax, trumpet),
Guitar with Andrew Beveridge ,
drums/percussion with Toby Bender and
Martin Pang the Keyboardist. Follow the links given to contact these individuals for gigs, or dance lessons with Karen.
Joys' vocals are powerful and she's up there with the greats like Aretha Franklin (to whom she makes a few references) and Etta James. A show isn't always about
just the vocals. An entertainer that she is!
Joys ' has
the whole kit and caboodle. Great band, backup singers, dancer to entertain, topped only by her delight in getting the masses up on the floor to dance and engage with the music. She'll get off that stage; which she did, and sing amongst you and teach you an African song which was delightful.
With an
A list of clients to her name, if you'd like to have this powerful songstress in your corner for Corporate Events, Private Parties, Weddings, Festivals etc or even as background entertainment, she has a
package of curated music that'll be perfect for you.
Dinner was served at this dinner and show event, and I can't fault the grilled fish and salad that was fresh and perfectly cooked. It's definitely a great venue for a night out, date night, or hanging with a group of friends. A venue that nods at the St Kilda of old while boasting its own urban style. It's a historical pub with contemporary cool.
