JoyCut | Robert Smith's Meltdown [One Step Closer To The Moon] - Documentary Review (Melbourne Documentary Film Festival 2021)

Since early 2020, music lovers have been denied their annual treks to big festivals. Even smaller live gigs have been shut down or strictly limited too. So if you're a music fan who is itching for something aurally great, grab a ticket to the online screening of JoyCut | Robert Smith's Meltdown (One Step Closer To The Moon). Then fire up your biggest screen, turn the lights down low, sit back, and enjoy this marvellous documentary.

The movie was filmed during the Meltdown Festival that took place in London in June 2018. Unlike many festivals that are booked by producers, Meltdown invites a different famous musician or band to curate each year. The 2018 Meltdown was curated by Robert Smith of The Cure. His selections included around 90 acts across music, film and art. The festival attracted the highest ticket sales since Meltdown had begun in 1993.

The focus of the film is a band you may not have heard of – JoyCut. They're an independent band from Italy. Their music is passionate, artistic, emotive, darkwave electronic in its style. As it is mostly performed without vocals, there's an immersive cinematic quality to their sound that sparks your imagination. You're treated to a lot of footage of JoyCut performing during the Meltdown Festival, interspersed with interviews and behind the scenes stills. The interviews are with a variety of fans and music industry folk who all sing the band's praises.

The interviewees also talk about how influential Robert Smith and The Cure have been for so many acts throughout the generations. Rightly so, Smith is given a lot of credit for the huge success of 2018's festival. His line-up selections included: Nine Inch Nails, The Psychedelic Furs, My Bloody Valentine, Manic Street Preachers, Mogwai, Deftones, Placebo, Kristin Hersh, and The Church.

Most beautifully for JoyCut, Robert Smith and The Cure have been great inspirations for them since they were young teenagers. Being invited to perform at a festival by their musical hero is an amazing endorsement for the band. Hearing about how all their sacrifices, passion and hard work has culminated in the group being recognised by someone who so inspired them is a beautiful payoff.

If you enjoy the music of acts such as New Order, Joy Division, The Cinematic Orchestra, and Total Control you're likely to become JoyCut's newest fan.
