The Place at the State Library of Western Australia (SLWA) is one of my favourite places to take the kids when the weather does not warrant outdoor activities or when I simply run out of ideas of where to take them. It's a special place on the mezzanine level in the SLWA building just for children; so much so that adults with no children are asked not to visit it.
There are books there (of course), toys, and computers to explore online stories together with your children. And there's a cafe downstairs which usually sends their heavenly food and coffee smells, free of charge, to the general public. Food (other than nut-free snacks for children) are not to be consumed at the Place, but it's good to know that when the little (or big) tummy is growling, it's just a flight of stairs away from taming it.
Currently The Place already has routine children programs such as story time and baby rhyme time. However, they are amping up their offering in School Term 2, 2014 by a new program called "Journeys @ The Place" targeting children aged up to 5 years old.
Activities will be held on Thursdays and Fridays between 10.00am and 2.00pm, beginning on Thursday, 1 May. So it's perfect timing to take the little brothers or sisters to when the big kids are in school. Or even if you don't have any school-age kids, it's good to take your little ones out and who knows, you might even make a friend or two along the way.
There is a new activity each week (repeated over the two days) and each of these activities aims to be a "journey with your child through story and play."
The schedule of activities are:
1-2 May: Tracks With Play Dough
8-9 May: Pack Your Bags
15-16 May: Tracks With Stamps
22-23 May: Red Riding Hood Map
29-30 May: Car City
5-6 June: Grandma's Basket
12-13 June: Discovery Boxes
19-20 June: Wolf Disguise
26-27 June: Bear Hunt
3-4 July: Sensory Bags
All sessions are free of charge with no bookings required. However, please do not leave your children unattended in the library. Parent or caregiver supervision is required at all times.
