Josh Pyke performs with the power and body of WASO
Aria Award-winning singer-songwriter Josh Pyke is joining up with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra for one spectacular performance on July 24th at the Perth Concert Hall.
Pyke burst on to the Australian music scene with his hit single "Middle of the Hill" in 2005. Since then he has performed to sold-out crowds on 22 national tours and he is a sought-after performer on the festival scene, from Bluesfest to Big Day out and Splendour in the Grass. Described as a modern-day storyteller, Pyke is in a league of his own, as his unique and intelligent lyrics weave warm melodies.
Josh Pyke with WASO
Pyke was excited to make his orchestral debut in April with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, when ten emerging composers from across Australia were invited to re-work his songs for full symphony orchestra. Two of these composers were West Australians; Lachlan Skipworth and Jared Yapp.
It had long been a desire of Pyke's to have his songs played with an orchestra and he said "It's literally a dream come true for me". Pyke gave the composers extensive creative license to arrange the songs for orchestra, as his philosophy is, he "believe(s) songs are there to be experimented with, and that any version is just that, a version amongst many". Pyke's creative openness is reflected in his outlook that while his recorded versions of his songs are only moments in time, his hope is that emerging composers will bring their own moments to the songs.
The West Australian Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by WASO Assistant conductor, Christopher Dragon. This will be a wonderful opportunity to hear a selection of songs from Pyke's four studio albums performed with the power and body of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. Hits performed on the evening will include, "Leeward Side", "The Lighthouse Song" and "Middle of the Hill".
