Far North Queensland is brimming with magnificent waterfalls, and is one of my personal favourites. Located in a quaint country town called Miriwinni, is approximately 75km away from Cairns, in the Atherton Tablelands. The drive should take approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes along the Bruce Highway. Once you arrive in Miriwinni, take the Mount Bartle Frere turnoff and follow the signs to the carpark.
Once you have parked, you can head upwards to the viewing platform or down to the natural swimming pool. I recommend doing both, starting with the viewing platform. The uphill ascent is approximately 700m on a paved pathway and is accessible for prams and wheelchairs. The walk is easy and at the top, you will be treated to a spectacular view of the tall, multi-tiered waterfall, framed by giant boulders that have become smooth over time due to the motion of the water washing over the granite.
Swimming is not allowed in this section due to slippery rocks and fast-flowing water; however, you can swim in the bottom pool.
Whilst swimming is allowed in the lower pool, I found that the rocks were still very slippery and the water can be fast-flowing depending on when you visit, so take care! Aside from its outstanding natural beauty, another attraction of is its own natural waterslide. There is a platform and some dry rocks where you first enter the lower pool, where you can leave any belongings whilst you enjoy the water. Swim across the pool and clamber out on the other side to access the slide. The rocks down here are very slippery so it is a little difficult to get out of the water and climb up. However, it is worth the effort as the slide is a lot of fun. The water carries you down the smooth surface, but take care on days when the water is flowing particularly fast.
There are picnic facilities, BBQs, and public toilets in the carpark, if you want to make a day of it.
All in all, is a stunning waterfall that's a lot of fun, so I would thoroughly recommend a visit to any waterfall-lovers who are in the area.
