Cambodia as a country is famous for a few things. These include wonderful warm hearted and friendly people, ancient ruins and of course the horror of the Khmer Rouge. Here is a fascinating exhibition that is able to cover both the joys and horrors of Cambodia's history and contemporary culture.
It was during the terror of Pol Pot that a great Cambodian diaspora occurred with Cambodian people, like many others facing similar horrors in the world today, sought out and were given safe havens around the world. Others remained within Cambodia and some were lucky to survive.
Jorng Jam means "to remember" and this exhibition combines personal photos and relics from before, during and after the reign of the Khmer Rouge, with artworks that use or are inspired by those artifacts and memories.
The Jorng Jam exhibition has toured the world with the purpose of linking the widespread Cambodian communities together with their common heritage. This is an exhibition of Cambodian people as seen by Cambodians.
I have always been fascinated with the ordinary aspects of culture, especially within extraordinary contexts. The Jorng Jam II exhibition lets you wander into people's lives and experience their recollections and understanding of that time.
