On Davidson Tc, in the heart of the busy city of Joondalup, located in the northern suburbs of Perth lies Joondalup BBQ Chinese Restaurant. When you walk through the doors, you automatically get hit with a sense of authenticity. Raw chicken and duck hang in front of you, mimicking a roadside vendor's stall in the heart of Bangkok. If you have a weak stomach as I do, don't let this put you off. Simply approach it with an open mind.
The restaurant itself could do with a makeover, looking dated and not particularly welcoming. The toilets are somewhat hidden down an unmarked corridor. The tables are cramped, and do not cater comfortably to a group larger than 8. However, if you are willing to sacrifice elbow room, it is well worth it.
The service is friendly, however there are communication barriers. Like all the best Chinese restaurants, this store is owned and run by 1st generation Chinese immigrants. Despite their sunny smiles and willingness to help, some things do get lost in translation.
So, what makes the décor and cramped tables worth it? the food! Never before have I tasted such exquisite Chinese cuisine, and when you Chinese dining at the table next to you, you know its genuine. Aside from an extensive menu, the restaurant also offers deals for groups. Ordering the banquet for 5 will get you 9 courses, from prawn crackers to dessert. My favourites were the beef and black bean, and the fried chicken, cooked to perfection. The servings are large and more than enough. The menu caters to all tastes, from vegetarian to the just plain fussy.
One thing to note is that although the restaurant is listed as fully licensed, they do NOT serve alcohol. They do allow BYO wine and sometimes beer. However bring your own bottle openers, because for a busy restaurant they are in short supply. If you run out of alcohol there is a liquor store a short walk down the road.
Another note: the restaurant does not stay open late, so get there as early as you can. This also beats the rush that can result in you having to wait for a table to open up. This is a very popular place!
Joondalup BBQ Chinese is extremely popular and always busy, for good reason! I highly recommend this restaurant to families, couples, groups or those who are just plain hungry.
