Jonathan Schuster – Dad! (And the Other Men My Mother has Been With) @ Spleen Bar

This year's Melbourne International Comedy Festival, as always, is a smorgasbord of fantastic comedians from Australia and around the world. With a watchful eye, every year I like to look at some of the lesser known acts and try to find a stand out who'll may make it big in a few years time. 2012 has introduced me to an up and coming comedian from Geelong named Jonathan Schuster, who has been performing his fantastically funny show, Jonathan Schuster – Dad! (And the Other Men My Mother has Been With).

The 24-year-old Schuster has been doing the rounds of the Melbourne comedy nights perfecting his strong comedic wittiness and has been a stand out performer. In 2007, he won the Triple J Raw Comedy competition and has only gotten better (that and a Coles ad, he'll let you know have been his two greatest feats to date). With his new show at the festival, it's clear he is making a pathway to a very successful career in comedy.

His boyish charms along with his relatable and observational humour keeps you in stitches as he goes through his father and the other men his mother have been with. This guy is flat out funny. He has great comedic timing where you get drawn into his amusing stories. On occasion he himself can't help but laugh when he knows he's about to teeter on overstepping boundaries. Schuster is able to build an amazing buzz in the room, where the climax is always a burst of laughter. That buzz is the reason people go to see a comedy show. After two minutes the audience were smiling and bracing themselves for some serious laughs.

Jonathan Schuster is becoming a refined comedian showing that he is able to go from doing ten minute sets to carrying an audience throughout his fifty minute comedy festival show. What impresses the most is his ability to tell his jokes without seeming like they're scripted. Half the time it's hard to tell if he's making it up or if he just has the innate ability to fool us with his clever delivery.

Either way, it makes for more laughs and had me leaving with sore sides. With the comedy festival calendar being chocked with big and small named comedians, it's hard to know who is worth seeing. You will not regret this show. As people were leaving it were only conversations about the show, which is always a good sign where everyone got something different out of his performance.

For me, coming from a family with two sisters, Schuster had me laughing with several of his outrageously funny jokes about his own sister. For others it was his off kilter look at life or his love for recreating scenes from the film Home Alone.

As we are now half way though the comedy festival it may mean that you miss his show but he should be a name that you put aside and remember where he will no doubt pop up around the town touring again very soon.

Jonathan Schuster has the "X Factor" quality people admire and are drawn to. He is obviously a talented writer and naturally funny guy where if he continues to make people laugh as they were during his show, there's no doubt he'll be a regular name amongst the comedy scene for years to come.
