From a handful of children taking classes in the park to an incorporated not for profit and the largest youth circus arts trainers, Flipside Circus proves that from little things big things grow.
Flipside offers classes for children aged 18 months to 18 years. New students can book into beginner classes, while more experienced students might be invited to join performance arts classes. Previous Flipside students have performed at Australia Zoo and South Bank Australia Day celebrations.
Flipside's training centre is located at Alderley; find out more on the website. See you on the Flipside!
Vulcana Women's Circus School
Miriam Kate Williams was better known as Vulcana, a legendary Welsh strong-woman and member of the 'Sensible Clothes Movement' that lobbied against corsets and other restrictive clothing. So when a group of Brisbane performers founded a women's only circus school in 1995, Vulcana was the perfect name.
Vulcana Women's Circus isn't strictly women's only; the children and teens classes are mixed, and there are some mixed adult workshops. But the majority of Vulcana's classes are for students who identify as female, trans or non-binary.
Classes for adults include everything from acrobatics to hula hooping, while children and teens classes are organised according to age. For more information, see their website.
If the daredevil side of circus skills is more your speed, Twisted Tricks provides a safe environment for people of all ages and fitness levels to learn. The trapeze school is the first of its kind on Brisbane's south, and is open to anyone over the age of 3.
Test the waters with a single swing for $10, or book into an hour and a half lesson or block of lessons. Participants will learn a new trick at each lesson.
