"Rugby is a game for barbarians played by gentlemen. Football is a game for gentlemen played by barbarians" - Oscar Wilde

Rugby can become a bit of a forgotten sport in South Australia. Some view it as a rough game for brutes and bullies, others may see it as the territory of the Eastern states. In truth rugby offers a great chance to get fit for the young and old, and South Australian rugby clubs can offer a great community to become a member of.

Rugby Union is a team sport, like AFL it is a full contact sport that involves tackling other players to gain possession of the ball. Tries are scored once a player crosses the try line with the ball and touches it to the ground. Many will know the national team the Australian Wallabies, and of their common rivals the New Zealand All Blacks who perform the hakka before each game, but many local teams are unknown to non-followers of the sport.

Regardless of where you live in Adelaide, chances are there is a team nearby. These teams welcome new players to not only join the game, but also become members of their club. People can join at varying levels and clubs will often have different levels that players of different skills can participate in. This includes junior teams for younger players, or even teams for older players who are looking for a slightly slower game.

As well as clubs seeking players, you will always be encouraged to head down to games to show your support for your team. Rugby matches are held on Saturdays, and some Sundays, during the colder months. Times and places can vary based on the level you are playing in or watching, and the opposing team. Each team boasts a lively community that shows up to support their team, and that participate in various club events.

Most clubs will charge an annual membership fee. These can vary based on whether you're a playing or social member. Membership covers things like insurance, but it can also mean access to club facilities like bars and social events.

If you're interested in getting involved with your local rugby union club then take a look below and get in contact with one of the clubs. Rugby offers a great opportunity for fitness and socialising. There is also the opportunity for younger players to hone their skills and aim high towards hitting the big time. While Australia has never held a FIFA World Cup they have held two of the six previously held rugby world cups, and joining a club now could help your child make it to the next one.
