If you're new to your town or city, looking to make new friends, or just want to expand your interests, you should consider joining a Meetup group. Meetup has literally hundreds of groups in every capital city and major town in Australia, some with hundreds of members.

Your local city may have a ladies social group. If not, why not start your own? Image courtesy Meetup website.

Scott Heiferman originally founded Meetup in New York after the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Centre. He was moved by the way the community came together in the aftermath of that disaster. This inspired him to start a social network. Meetup is now global and boasts over 112,000 groups worldwide, with 7000 groups created just last month.

Groups exist to meet and talk about travel experiences, and plan future trips. Image courtesy Meetup website.

Meetup has social, business, cultural and adventure groups to suit all ages, tastes, likes, locations and interests. From brunch groups, wine lovers, movie buffs, dining groups, sci-fi and fantasy groups, bookclubs, hypnosis, cheese lovers, walkers and joggers, meditation, travel, IT groups, outdoor adventure, night life or merely social groups, Meetup has them all!

There are even personal development groups, business and entrepreneurial groups to expand your network and improve your business knowledge and contacts. If you're single, coupled, over thirty, a baby boomer or generation Y there is something for everyone.

And if you can't find what you're looking for, you can even start your own group!

Joining is easy and costs nothing, most Meetups are free (or for the cost of an event). Some groups may charge a dollar per event to cover expenses. What are you waiting for? Expand your interests, have fun and participate in your local community by joining a Meetup now!

There are some great meetup groups- it may take a couple of tries to find the ones that suit you best in regards to people & activities, but once you find ones that you enjoy, it is a great way to get out there & meet new people. I belong to 3 different groups & have made some wonderful new friends the past year.

I have really enjoyed attending and organising meetup activities since about mid-2013. The meetup groups that have been most helpful for me were the moderately sized ones between 200-1000 members. In Sydney there are groups for all interests; there is even one for cross culturally connecting asian men with women called Sydney Women & Asian Men!

Too few and generally only 0-2 show up unless it's a combined meetup; too many and you can't form deep relationships.
