Scott Heiferman originally founded Meetup in New York after the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Centre. He was moved by the way the community came together in the aftermath of that disaster. This inspired him to start a social network. Meetup is now global and boasts over 112,000 groups worldwide, with 7000 groups created just last month.
