If you're looking for some real authentic Americana fare, get your good self along to
. This is a man who has studied his craft well, taking his mission to the US and experiencing first hand what a real burger tastes like in its native land. Fortunately for Perth locals Johnny has brought this bovine brilliance back to Oz and is a master in perfecting and replicating traditional burgers.
The staff are friendly, efficient and keen to give you a good food experience. It's a family affair and they were all there this night and more entertaining than Bob's Burgers! Animated and passionate, the mother so proud of her son's drive and commitment while Johnny himself is so keen, eager and knowledgeable that you just want him to succeed as a "Burgtrepeneur".
But does the food stand up to the hype? Absolutely.
We ordered the
Lord of the Rings and the
Cheese Sticks for starters. Johnny assured us we would not find the Monterey style morsels of temptation any where in WA. He's even had the official thumbs up from a delighted customer from the States who was not only impressed with the authenticity of the cheese sticks, but that he had finally found somewhere in Perth who served them. Finger lickin good!
For mains we ordered the
Wings of Glory and the
Skinny Burger. I'm not normally one to give into the Buffalo Wing hysteria but I could not get enough of these plump and flavoursome little guys. Beautiful and spicy with a delicious ranch dressing these really were a hit.
But it was the Skinny Burger I was most interested in and I was not disappointed. This is the defining stamp of what Johnny is attempting to give his customers and it's a bold dish to offer as there is nowhere to hide. A healthy sized patty between crunchy iceburg lettuce, topped with home made ketchup and nothing else.
This burger highlights the excellent quality produce Johnny sources without compromise (the opening day was nearly postponed because Johnny had not found a meat supplier who could give him the quality of meat he was satisfied with). Johnny doesn't add "fillers" into his beautiful patties nor does he complicate the cooking process. It quite literally was ground beef with very little else, besides the natural flavour of the meat and seasoning. Beautiful. If you are living a grain free lifestyle - this is a Paleolithic dream meal!
Of course, Johnny has an extensive menu which is not without humour. My particular favourites were the Magic Mushroom Burger, the Ching Chong Burger, the Honolulu Lulu and Dracula's Dilemma!
Of course what sort of a burger joint would it be without a novelty burger or two. At Johnny's this would be the chest banging, club beating alpha chow challenge,
The Burgerzilla. At nearly $40 a pop, this thing requires no plate, is housed on the very tray it is brought out on, surrounded by an army of fries and probably a defibrillator on stand by. Boasting a ridiculous 5 beef patties, 6 slices of American cheese and basically enough bacon to feed a small town, better bring your
A game for this bad boy, as well as an empty stomach! Adam Richman would surely have a crack!
Johnny is a bit of a food scientist and like most good chefs understands that once you've gone to the effort to source quality produce, the key to honouring the food, the customers and the establishment is not to overcomplicate it.
is bang on for flavour, freshness, authenticity and value for money.
