John Waters is one of cinema's most ground breaking auteurs. The director, actor and writer is a true artist. His admirers span generations and sub-cultures, but they all have something in common. They are anything but mainstream.
So it should come as no surprise Brisbane's 'King of Cult' Kristian Fletcher is soon to present the John Waters Movie Fest 2017. The New Globe Theatre will play host to the event on Wednesday, 19th and Sunday, 23rd of April. Opening night will give Waters fans a chance to see a newly restored print of Multiple Maniacs. The Sunday session will kick off with Pecker followed by Polyester in ODORAMA%%.

Waters' films aren't for kids or those who are easily offended. It's no surprise these screenings will be 18 plus events. Luckily for those of you who like a tipple with your talkies, there will be a licensed bar operating on both the Wednesday and Sunday.
While Waters did dabble in more mainstream filmmaking, it's his movies from the 70s and 80s that really broke new ground. He had a habit of casting controversial people such as criminals, pornographic actresses and trans people. While we're far more open minded about the trans community these days, in the days Waters was putting people like Divine in starring roles, they were generally frowned upon by the mainstream society.
He also loved to cast (shock, horror) people who were overweight in starring roles and as romantic leads. Given the 70s and 80s were the times of super slim coked up starlets and aerobicised airheads dominating Hollywood films, that was yet another decision of the director's that was seen as outrageous.

These days, we might not even raise an eyebrow at some of the themes he broached in celluloid. Indeed, perhaps Waters' bravery in putting the shunned, outcast, unconventional and shocking on screen has paved the way for other film-makers to make some riskier choices. He and others like him may in fact have something to do with why society is becoming more open-minded and accepting of those who don't fit the mainstream mould.
Multiple Maniacs is considered very rare, so we are especially lucky to have the chance to see a restored version of the black and white film. When describing the film's synopsis, producer Kristian Fletcher says, "The Cavalcade of Perversion is a travelling show put on by a troupe of misfits whose shocking proclivities are topped only by those of their leader: the glammer-than-glam, larger-than-life Divine, who's out for blood after discovering her lover's affair."
Pecker centres around a talented young photographer who loves to take photos of his Baltimore neighbourhood and his crazy family. In somewhat of a comedy of errors he winds up engulfed in the world of New York artistic pretention. It's the least shocking of the three films that will be screening.

Polyester in ODORAMA%% is going to be an experience to remember. Viewers can purchase an 'ODORAMA' card with their tickets and smell along with the show. There will be ten smells on the card to enhance your viewing pleasureā¦or perhaps displeasure. According to reports, in the original screenings the scents were arranged by number and the audience was instructed to scratch and sniff when the number appeared on screen. The audience didn't know what they would be smelling, but sometimes visual cues would trick them into thinking they were going to smell flowers, and instead they got smelly shoes. Don't fear though, not all smells on the card are nasty ones!
In Polyester Divine plays a 'good Christian woman' whose world is falling apart. Her husband runs a porn theatre and has had a series of affairs. Her son is a violent foot fetishist who has been breaking women's feet and her daughter is pregnant to a local hoodlum.
To celebrate the special screening of Polyester in ODORAMA, WeekendNotes subscribers have the chance to win a Double Pass to Polyester in ODORAMA on Sunday 23 April at New Globe Theatre, 220 Brunswick St Fortitude Valley at 3.15pm. Please note that the double pass does not include the ODORAMA card, which will be available for purchase for $3 at the door.To go into the draw, all you have to do is send an email titled 'Polyester in ODORAMA' to and let us know in 25 words or less why you want to see attend this special event. If you're a fan of cult and independent cinema, I can highly recommend experiencing one, if not all of the films on show at the John Waters Movie Fest 2017. If you find you love his work, I can also recommend getting your hands on a copy of Cecil B. Demented, Serial Mom and Pink Flamingos to keep the festival going in your own home.
Are you a Bibliophile like John Waters?
Did you know John has a collection of over 8,000 books? If you love reading too, grab a copy of Waters' book Role Models. You'll learn more about the influences and life of the movie making legend. It's a fascinating and insightful read. My copy of Role Models is in the bathroom right now. I've been reading it on the loo. I'm pretty sure Waters' would approve of that considering what he had Divine eat in Pink Flamingos.
