in Sandringham is one of those inauspicious parks that you may easily walk or drive by, but once you stop you'll notice there's indeed something special about the space.

Named after one of Melbourne's founders, from afar the park appears to be largely a collection of benches and trees, but closer inspection shows a beautiful garden along its back corner.

With ferns, roses, sweet peas and more, the garden is a wonderful public space to (literally) stop and smell the roses. This is especially so after a very Melbourne rain-filled morning.

What's more, whether post-rain shower or in the middle of summer, the park has a beautiful open field with a number of trees scattered about.

True, a picnic at a nearby beach or two in the middle of December may be the most Australian way to spend a weekend day out, but for those who don't mind an amble along with an umbrella in the spring these Gardens are a great place to stop for a time and take in the beauty of the surrounds.

Finally, if you find a plant you really like? Consider giving Bayside Community Garden a visit as you may find on sale for your garden at home the same species or type that features in John Batman.

: a little but lovely park in Bayside.
