Joey Pouch Knitting Crafternoons (and Beginner Knitting Workshops)
Run by a local group called
Melbourne Alternative Crafters , these
joey pouch knitting crafternoons are a fun and laid back approach to taking direct action in helping to save our wildlife. Occurring at 2pm on the third Sunday of every month at
Grumpy's Green eco-friendly bar in Fitzroy.
Who Can Attend?
This workshop is for all who are looking for a quirky way of helping our wildlife. There is a mixture of experienced knitters and those who are just beginning, so you are in good company if you are one of the latter. You may also meet fellow animal activists who are involved in other animal rights campaigns/organisations so seize the opportunity to network within this compassionate community.
What To Expect:
An afternoon of knitting pouches for rescued joeys (including possums, kangaroos and koalas) who have been rescued by volunteers of
Wildlife Victoria with a live swing band playing in the background. Bring along your own wool (vegans please be aware that unfortunately synthetic yarn isn't appropriate for joeys) and needles if you have any, otherwise there will be some provided with the opportunity of a small donation. With the guidance of others this can help you on your way to knitting many pouches both now and in the future. There are
guidelines given by Wildlife Victoria of how to go about knitting your pouches, however whatever the size of your pouch they are always in need of various types. Food is also available at Grumpy's Green with a mainly vegetarian
menu and some vegan/gluten free options.
Not all of us can be wildlife rescue volunteers, but some of us can knit (or learn how to). This workshop nurtures our willingness to contribute to our wildlife, engages us with like minded people and encourages our creativity.
