Once again the Henderson Gallery at South Bank brings us an amazing exhibition of local artistic discoveries. In this case, two local women with very different, but very expressive styles. Pop in and enjoy the art and stay for a cup of coffee and a snack at the Birrang Cafe.

Jo Draper & Jane Dixon are neighbours who share a passion for art, though who have very different styles and personalities. They have come together for this lovely little exhibition.

Jane Dixon starting painting only a few years ago after attending a workshop. For her it was a therapeutic way to express her feelings. A lot of her work revolves around patterns, both finding them in objects as well as within herself. Her most prominent piece "Broken Hearts" was done on a plaster spattered board that she found. Yet she does more than just find the pattern, she expresses her own feelings and ideas within that context, creating something new and truly of the moment and place.

Jo Draper has studied art and works as an artist's teaching aid. This can be seen through her technical mastery of a wide range of different media, often using techniques and materials that are not widely used in the artistic community. But there is something much more to her art than good technique. She uses the media often perfectly to express deep ideas. One example is her paintings which she overlays with silk scarves to soften the work. Both technically brilliant but also deeply expressive.

If you haven't wandered up Earnest Street to The Henderson Gallery, you really should. Run by established artist Robert Henderson, it started with his work to help prisoner's express themselves through art, and has blossomed into a project for an art space to help a whole range of artists who wouldn't normally have the opportunity, to find their voice and a have place to exhibit.

The works at The Henderson Gallery change every month, and this exhibition runs until December 8, after which a new artist will be featured. Along with the works of the main exhibition, there are plenty of works by Robert Henderson himself as well as past exhibitors and other artists. There has been a lot of interest in the works, with buyers from government offices as well as corporate buyers and art investors among regular purchasers.

Of course along with the art, you can also enjoy coffee and a snack at the Birrang Cafe . Birrang is an Aboriginal word meaning journey to another place. It is one more reason to head into The Henderson Gallery.

This lovely little coffee shop is a great place to sit, relax, enjoy a board game and free WiFi, all while surrounded by art. I have dibs on the big red sofa.

The writer attended the exhibition opening as a guest of The Henderson Gallery.
