In its unassuming position at The Galeries Victoria, Jimmy's Recipe might look like a dodgy no-frills eatery but it's quite possibly the best laksa in town.
If you're a fan of Malaysian cuisine, you will love the fragrant aroma coming from the other side of the busy service counter. Place your order and watch the cooks assemble the laksa right before your eyes. So adept are they at pouring soup, adding noodles and the rest of the traditional ingredients that you'll have your laksa on a tray faster than you can get your wallet out.
For those who aren't familiar with the dish, Laksa is the much loved favourite soup of Malaysia. A spicy and very tasty curry noodle broth cooked with coconut milk, fresh chilli and a variety of herbs and spices with your choice of meat. At Jimmy's they have 7 different Laksa options; beef, chicken, fish, prawn, seafood, combination and vegetable. Try them all (perhaps not at the same time) and you'll quickly learn which is your favourite. My personal favourite is the beef with extra spongy tofu to soak up the yummy soup. Costing $6.50 to $9.50 a bowl, this is one lunch that won't break the budget.
And Laksa isn't the only thing Jimmy's are good at cooking. They serve a pretty tasty traditional Hainanese chicken rice served with boneless chicken breast, cucumber, a chilli and ginger sauce plus a side of clear vegetable soup. On the menu you'll also find other Malay favourites like beef rendang, chicken and lamb curries. Just don't expect too much in the way of service. It is similar to a food court operation, so you will have to carry your own tray and drinks. It also gets incredibly busy here at lunch time so get there early to nab a good table.
Authentic Malaysian cuisine is certainly not as readily available in Sydney as its more popular Asian relatives Thai or Chinese, making Jimmy's Recipe even more special. Although certainly not a fancy lunch, it is both excellent tasting and great value for money. For those lucky enough to work in town you will no doubt become a regular like the hundreds of fans who do lunch here every week.
