Headlining the Mae Tao Clinic Fundraiser , Jimmy Watts Band brought their blues / roots / alt-country to the stage at the zoo .

With a core four-piece band; frontman Jimmy Watts on acoustic guitars and vocals, Mellissa Hender on African percussion, Paul Young on drums and Mike Leo on bass, they were joined by Melbourne's Silas Palmer on keys and the Swoon duo on harmonies and guitar. The gig doubled as a soft-launch, in Brisbane, of their second album "January's Pages". Rave Magazine had said of Jimmy Watts Band - "Bursting with energy from the get go ... a refreshingly raw take on Blues & Roots ... like Newton Faulkner after too much Red Bull!", so I was looking forward to the performance.

I was surprised by the energy of the crowd, on a hot, humid, Brisbane summer's night, especially given that they'd had three great performances already, from North Queensland's Swoon , Peter B & The Homeless Souls , and Astrid and The Asteroids , but they drew on their reserve energy and danced to the music as the band worked their way through a number of tunes, including the title track January, a reflection of the 2011 floods in South East Queensland. I particularly enjoyed the finale, which included a wicked, extended drum solo by Paul Young (also of The Quadratic Contingency ) and a fun call and response from guitar to keyboard; and overall, their energy was infectious from beginning to end.
