There's a sharp looking blues performer on stage. Very sharp. His name is Jimi Beavis. "Who is Jimi Beavis?" is the buzz around town.
I've been lucky enough to catch him at a number of different venues, and last Sunday night he played at Ric's Bar in the Brunswick St Mall. The band on the night has four musicians, Jimi on vocals as well as harps and the recent addition of a kazoo, Dave McGuire on guitar, Kirsten Baade on a stunning upright bass, and Geoff Parsons on drums. They play in a number of combinations and that allows them to create different atmospheres for the audience (and for band members to refresh their drinks).
This venue is good for intimate gigs, where you can interact with the band in an informal setting. Jimi Beavis plays the blues, mostly original tracks, and the sound they create lifts you up out of your seat and compels you to dance. At times, the audience was encouraged to sing along.
In January, Jimi Beavis' song "Ain't Afraid Of Crying" charted
#21 on the 4ZZZ Hottest 100. This track is found on his latest EP "No Need To Deny It".
