Jim Henson's The Power of the Dark Crystal
#1 - Comic Book Review
Many years have passed since Kira and Jen restored the Dark Crystal, uniting the warring races of the Skeksis and the Mystics and bringing peace to the world of Thra. Kira and Jen sleep on their throne while pilgrims come each day to bring offerings to the Crystal in exchange for sharing in its healing power. Thurma is a fireling, a fire creature from a race who live near the planet's core. She is sent by her people to obtain a shard from the crystal to save her own people from extinction, but doing so will shatter the crystal and bring back the Skeksis.
In celebration of the 35th anniversary of the release of the movie,
The Dark Crystal, Boom! Studios and the Henson Company have created
The Power of the Dark Crystal, a 12 issue limited series based on an unreleased screenplay for an official sequel. In the first issue, Thurma arrives at the castle to beg Jen and Kira for a piece of the crystal shard. Not too much has actually happened yet, as the writers are just setting the scene for the story to come. The plot would make little sense to someone who hasn't seen the movie, but for fans, it is a wonderful trip down memory lane. The art is beautiful, and the writers have captured the spirit of the original story.
The Power of the Dark Crystal #1 is a promising start to what looks like a wonderful new fantasy story that is sure to appeal to fans of
The Dark Crystal.
