I had always thought that one would have to travel some distance to have some real country food in South Australia, until I stumbled upon (JCK) at Magill. JCK is a place where the talk about good old fashioned country service with a smile is surpassed by the delivery of the service.

Jills Country Kitchen, or abbreviated to JCK, is a small niche cafe serving a number of seasonal home style country delights for all day breakfast, brunch, lunch and afternoon tea. There is also a very popular (bookings recommended) high tea on Thursday and Friday afternoons at 3pm. It was mid-morning when I arrived, so breakfast was my choice.

The Potted Breakfast is a unique country baked dish rarely found in Adelaide. With a choice of baked beans or chilli con carne for the piping hot filling, I chose the latter. A ramekin is layered in bacon, and covered in chilli con carne, and then topped with an egg, and is then baked for 15 minutes. Words escaped me as the soft yolked egg was pierced, and then mixed with the con carne. And I am not sure whether the bacon was smoked before hand, or whether it was the cooking style or the combination of other ingredients, but it had a taste to die for.

Next up was the Bacon and Cheese Omelette served with two slices of toasted ciabatta. While this was a little more of a "regular" dish than a Potted Breakfast, it again had that homestyle country feel to the dish with the volume of cheese that had been used to prepare the Omelette. The 'strings' of cheese on the fork as the Omelette was devoured were wonderful to watch.

With a range of arts and crafts, and other associated knick knacks, JCK has lots to offer and lots to distract. Further details of weekly and seasonal specials are available from their website or from their Facebook page.

JCK is located at 550 Magill Road, near the intersection with St Bernards Road and is open from 8.30am to 5pm on Mondays through Wednesday, 8.30am to 5pm on Thursday and Friday, and 8.30am to 2pm on Saturdays.
