Sigh... As I look at my pathetic attempts at watercolour painting, I can only dream about how it might feel to be talented enough to receive an invitation to be an artist in residence in France! But such is the experience of Melbourne born and based artist Jill Kempson, who last year completed a three month residency at 'Villa Fontaine', Antibes, France. The idyllic sounding Villa Fontaine is an historic building, set on a rocky outcrop, with an outlook over the Mediterranean Sea.

International artists are invited on behalf of the Antibes Council to stay in the region on the proviso that each artist donates a work created during the residency to the Council. These works then become part of the Antibe's Council's Permanent Collection.

Jill's time in France will shine through in the paintings to be shown in her upcoming free exhibition 'Places', which is being held at Alliance Francaise de Melbourne Gallery in St Kilda, from 29th April to 13th May 2014.

Jill has also travelled in Japan, and there are also strong influences from urban and rural Japan in her works. As the promotional material describes it:
"With her unwavering fascination with light and atmospheres, Jill has painted a series of alluring night-time urbanscapes depicting scenes ranging from steamy restaurants in Kyoto to the neon-lit streets of Tokyo. Contrasting these smaller intimate works, she has also painted large works featuring the mountainous regions of Japan with their serene and timeless beauty."

The official opening for the exhibition is on Tuesday 29 April, 6.30pm to 8.00pm. If you are interested in attending the opening night, please phone Alliance Francaise de Melbourne on (03) 9525 3463, or email [email protected].

The gallery is open every day during the exhibition:

Mon - Thu: 9.30am to 8.00pm
Fri: 9.30am to 6pm
Sat: 9am to 6pm
Sun: 10am to 6pm.

The gallery is accessible by public transport:

Trams: 16, 96, Fitzroy Street & 3, 5, 64, 67 St Kilda Junction

There is also limited parking available on site.

And now back to my painting... and dreaming...
