Making jewellery is an activity I have always admired but have found frustrating to learn, so when I discovered there were beginner's lessons on making a necklace and pair of earrings for just $35, I decided to give it a go. Tucked away in Federation Square, O'Hanlon Place in the gorgeous Gold Creek village Nicholls, Canberra, Bead Barn stocks every kind of bead one could possibly imagine. This includes supplying Swarovski crystals and Jablonex Czech glass products as well as sourcing a multitude of beads in varying materials from around the world.

Arriving early, I browsed a little before sitting down with five other women. I joined this class as part of a "Meetup" of women I had no met previous, however you could arrange for up 5 friends to go along. The class size was limited to 6, which felt an ideal size as there were plenty of laughs and chatting but there there not a lot of waiting when requiring assistance. We began with a rundown of what we would be learning and were each provided with a set of tools and the basics required, before getting to the fun part of choosing beads! I chose to go with black, turquoise and silver which made for a rather stunning effect, as you can see in the photos.

The instructions were simple to follow and compared to other attempts I've made at jewellery I found it very easy and am exceptionally pleased with what I made. Led through step-by-step, we started out with the necklace first, adding beads until we were each happy with the length. We also learnt some tips and tricks for finishing the neck lace which I've since applied in other jewellery making attempts. The earrings were a case of bending some wires, putting beads of our choice in (I chose to match the pattern and colours), popping on the fittings and we were done. Now I just have to find somewhere fancy enough to wear them!

There is also an online store with large pictures showing their stock for those unable to get to the physical store, they provide an online tracking service to track progress of your purchases and you can also sign up for promotional emails for any specials they have.

Bead Barn hold lessons on a regular basis and these are further detailed on their websitehttps://www.beadbarn.com.au/store/pages.php?pageid=1 The next beginner's class is on the 10th June, however if you are experienced they also hold a range of classes on varying types of jewellery making. Its great fun and you end up with a beautiful necklace and pair of earrings - I highly recommend giving it a go.
