Looking to dip your toe in the water for some kayaking..or just want to explore the lovely nature of Moreton Bay? Now that the weather is warmer why not head down to Manly Harbour?

Jetty Kayak hire is a new small business run solely by Jon Day and offering a very personable service out from Manly Harbour.

Our group of 15 gathered on a lovely Saturday morning at the public boat ramp near Manly Harbour. Our guide Jon Day popped out from the harbour with his array of double kayaks.

Getting ready!

We were all soon suited up in lifejackets before Jon gave us a demonstration on how to paddle with the secret being to keep in synch with your kayak buddy.

Paddle practice in Manly Harbour

Soon our groups were off practicing in the harbour going around in circles. Jon guided us out of the harbour mouth – taking care for us to avoid boat traffic – and soon we were out on Moreton Bay hugging the shore close to the rock wall.

Jon gave us a demonstration on how to gather together to form a ramp to help with transferring occupants between the kayaks.

We ventured out to the shallow waters of Norfolk Point with our guide pointing out the history of the area and the variety of marine life that can be found. He had been on trip near Green Island recently and had seen sea dugongs, a notoriously shy sea mammal.

We headed back over the shipping passage into Manly Harbour to paddle alongside some amazing yachts and catamarans--a Millionaires Row of floating vessels.

Our entire group enthused on the trip and many were quick to want to back on an even longer tour. The group had a mix of ages and experience of kayaking but all found it easy to master with Jon's superb guidance.

Jon offers a range of trips from a 1 hour tour of Manly Harbour to a 4 hour trip to Green Island where you can picnic on your very own island with the City buildings in view. Longer trips are available.

Jetty Kayak Hire has a range of hire prices ranging from a Double Kayak for $40/hr (2 people) with group rates available . Payment is by bank transfer direct to Jon at Jetty Kayaks.

The kayaking package includes a paddle, lifejacket and back rest for a guided tour of the harbour for groups of 10 – 14 passengers.. Paddlers need to dress in warm clothing that might get a bit wet. These are sit-on-tops and so you are close to the water. But (BYO) a towel and a spare set of clothes for the journey home just in case.

There is usually plenty of free parking in the surrounding area, and plenty of great cafes in Manly Harbour Village for that post trip coffee or meal. A favourite of mine is Cuttlefish Café on the Lower Esplanade just over the road from the park and Manly Pool.
