If you are looking for a new adventure sport, try jetsurfing
Jetsurfing is Perth's newest adrenaline pumping and thrill seeking activity on the Swan River.
The feeling of jetsurfing is like no other. It's sort of like surfing or snowboarding under engine power, or maybe wakeboarding or skateboarding. But the unique thing about jetsurfing is unlike other thrilling adventure sports, which can take a long time to master, with jetsurfing most people are standing up in 10-15 minutes.
The owners of Jetsurf Perth, Rebecca and Neil, started offering jetsurfing on Boxing Day 2014 and they have had people flocking to experience this new adrenaline pumping activity. They are the only company to offer jetsurfing in the Southern hemisphere and there couldn't be a prettier location to do it than on the picturesque Swan River, with the city of Perth for a backdrop.
Perth city makes a spectacular backdrop to the jetsurfing
Neil and Rebecca are passionate about jetsurfing and their enthusiasm is contagious. They patiently provide thorough instructions that can get even the non-athletic up and feeling the thrill of standing on water under the power of an engine. Instructions start on the riverbank and are then followed up with tips and feedback in the water, as they follow on a jet ski.
My young adult children had the opportunity to go jetsurfing. As keen surfers and snowboarders they loved this new adventure sport. It didn't take long for them to get the hang of jetsurfing and they were up, initially gaining confidence with the accelerator until they were weaving around making turns. Rebecca pointed out it can help to have experience with sports like surfing etc, but she finds if people diligently follow their guidance, even those without such past experiences, can pick it up because they don't have to unlearn the subtle difference between jetsurfing and other sports.
A jetsurf board looks a bit like a wakeboard with straps to put your feet in. There is a power cord with an accelerator, which is held in one hand to allow the rider to go at a pace that is comfortable for them- from a sedate speed to wild and extreme. No wonder people who love board sports or motor sports love the experience of jetsurfing so much.
Participants must be 16 years or over and weigh no more than 110kg. A basic level of fitness is required but you don't have to be athletic to pick it up.
Jetsurf Perth operates at Mill Point at the small beach/parking lot just to the east of the Narrows Bridge. This is on the South Perth foreshore directly across from the city.
The jetsurf experience includes a safety briefing, on land instruction and one-to-one feedback and instruction while on the water. Regular prices start at $139 but for the winter there are off-season rates beginning at $99.
Of course if you have a warm and sunny Perth day for jetsurfing that would be perfect. But don't be put off if the weather is a bit chilly- wetsuits from S-XL are provided as well as lifejackets to cover safety.
Bookings are recommended and are available from Thursday to Sunday, between 8:30am and 5:30pm. There are some wind conditions under which the jetsurfing cannot be offered so it is worth calling to confirm if the conditions are right.
