It sounds bold, risky and innovative but what does 'pay as you feel' mean? It's simply clever. It means you are able to donate what you feel the class was worth (cash or EFTPOS).

That's right- the yoga studio in Richmond offers 100% of yoga classes by donation and they are the only studio in the country to offer this model!



Jessica Dewar is the founder and director who is excited to welcome all comers because her vision is to make yoga accessible to all. Jessica has a background in psychology and rehabilitation and she knows how important yoga is for everyone.

Richmond is now her second studio located at Level 1, 119-121 Swan Street, and the space is just stunning. Its styling is minimal, clean and fresh. It's warm, hot tea is brewing and there's relaxing music playing.

I'll admit I don't know much about yoga but I don't think you could find a more passionate and friendly instructor. Jessica is energetic and obviously loves what she does. Her first instruction was 'Let's have fun today'. It was reassuring that she said 'Feel it, don't force it. If you don't feel comfortable just pay attention to the flow of the breath'. Jessica took every opportunity to help us slow down and settle into the space.




I AM AN ABSOLUTE BEGINNER! WHAT DO I DO?

That's me. It's confession time. I don't do exercise. The old muscles are less than limber and the most I know about yoga is that downward dog can lack glamour. My attempt at yoga proved I have no flexibility and minimal balance! I know my muscles have worked out more than I anticipated but I feel invigorated.

My companions were more experienced than me and here's what they said:

'You don't have to be good at yoga to do yoga. There are no rules and it's not a competition. That's why I like it. I am coming back'

'I like the way Jessica allowed us to do whatever we felt comfortable with our body'

'She really tailored it to my ability and experience'

'Last time I did yoga I fell asleep. I tried to be more adventurous this time'

My feedback: It's all about the experience. Namaste (or I bow to the divine in you)

DIFFERENT STYLES OF YOGA

Jessica has thought of everything. Here are some simple tips to ensure the best possible yoga experience.

LOCKED DOORS

At the beginning of each class, the doors are locked to ensure that you are not disrupted while getting in the zone but also so that no student is injured due to missing the start of class.



HOW TO BOOK A CLASS

Jessica encourages all students to book online prior to attending the studio. However, you don't have to commit to a certain amount of classes
To do this:
1. Go to www.jessicadewaryoga.com/timetable
2. Select date
3. Select the class you would like to attend by clicking BOOK MY MAT (a fully booked class will not display)
4. If you are not already logged in click CONTINUE to open the log in screen

WAITLIST

At the time of booking, students will be notified if they have been waitlisted. Should a position become available, you will receive an email notification advising of this and you will automatically be added to the class.

PARKING

There is plenty of free 1-3 hour parking surrounding the studio. Allow sufficient time to find a park before class.

FEE STRUCTURE

Apart from the unique "pay as you feel" model (by donation), they also offer the ability to purchase multi-class packages or unlimited memberships on our website. Click here to access pricing for those options!

How do they do it? Teachers are paid on commission which is directly calculated from the donations raised in any given class.




BUT WAIT…. THERE'S MORE…

The first studio is in Hawthorn East. They just celebrated their 3rd birthday on September 1st. It's a much smaller studio than Richmond, and very much built out of love. Every block, every strap, every plant in that little space has been added, as they've been able to afford it. They have been thrilled with the support of our community. It feels like home the moment students step inside. They want people to feel safe and welcome, regardless of age, experience, religion, financial situation or whether they can touch their toes or not. It's not about how flexible they are or how 'good' they are at yoga. Rather, Jessica has created two spaces where people can take time to slow down, reconnect and relax. Jessica says it's purely about offering a loving experience to every student who is open to receive it. Bring it on!

FUN FACT - THE MEANING OF THE OM SYMBOL


AUM is the sound of the universe. Everything in the universe is vibrating and the sound Om, vibrates at the same vibrational frequency found throughout everything in nature. AUM is the sound of the universe. When we chant it, we are symbolically and physically tuning in to that sound and recognising our connection to everything within the universe.
