In a span of under an hour, Jeromaia Detto is able to serve his audiences with a versatile selection of at least 14 unique characters - all appetizing beyond belief - and each of whom unfailingly wins our hearts over, with the perks and quirks associated with each personality.
Disappearing behind the curtains to reappear as someone brand new, with an essence that brings a fresh ambience to the environment, Detto is able to craft a new character from scratch by simply changing a couple of props and/or displaying a quick costume change, which resonates highly with the audience. We see certain characters return to our delight and it is just as hearty the second time around. While there are some characters that are, perhaps, less polished than others, it doesn't distract us from the enjoyable sense that makes the audiences roar in laughter.
Some audience participation is involved, but with an engaging and enthusiastic crowd, it makes the experience all the less daunting and all the more fun. His ability to organically infuse his sharp wit and humor, along with his brilliant skill of improv across a myriad of comedy-based contexts allows him to unleash his potential of jumping from an adorable little boy celebrating someone's birthday, to a guy with a gangster vibe who is passionate about delivering slam poetry on All Bran cereal, to a government employee who has soul-crushing pleasure at his job, to Leonardo Da Vinci who clearly created one of the best playtimes of the modern century, to a trio of waiters, who just wants to please his customers with wine.
Having gone to the show exhausted after a particularly rough day, my friend and I felt our spirits being uplifted by the silly, fun antics that unfolded before us on stage. It's a great show to be able to switch off from life's monotonous and tiresome schedule and instead, engage in a theatrical representation of some seriously hilarious characters to make our days infinitely happier and better.
Sydney-based Detto has successfully cemented himself as being one of the best emerging comedians with clowning and improv under his belt. His show of character-based sketch presents with a compilation of several independent characters and storylines, each of which has a different vibe to it and invokes lighthearted and wholesome content, so in reality, you're getting a number of mini-shows that add to the umbrella of one grand show. For a debut solo show, Detto was able to deliver a stellar opening night performance and prove himself worthy to be a significant part of the emerging comedy industry in Australia.
Jeromaia Detto: Canapes & Cocktails will be performing at Tandanya Arts Cafe (Live From Tandanya) till March 17, as part of the Adelaide Fringe. Book your tix here.
