It was mid-morning and we were getting ready for a day of lazing about in the sun at Bronte Beach . Before hitting the beach though, we needed breakfast. Luckily, we were spoilt for choice with plenty of cafes and eateries just opposite Bronte Park – and today, we chose Jenny's Cafe.

We parked ourselves at one of the tables out on the footpath, in a prime people-watching position. It wasn't particularly busy, but then again it was early and it was a weekday – had it been a weekend we would surely have had to wait for a table.

The menus are already on the table so we get straight to perusing the options. Jenny's breakfast menu has all the usual suspects, and will cater pretty well with something for everyone. Options include Victorian Raisin Bread ($4), Toasted Bread with Homemade Strawberry, Rhubarb, Marmelade Jam and Vegemite ($4), Fresh Fruit Crepes ($12.50) and a variety of egg options ($8.50-$19.50). For a more adventurous palette, try the Home Baked Spicy Great Northern Beans with three Poached Eggs on Toast ($13.50).

Being a bit of a ricotta fiend, I couldn't – wouldn't – go past the ricotta Hotcakes with Honeycomb Butter and Banana ($14.50). We also opted for the freshly baked Banana Bread ($7.50).

The ricotta hotcakes were soft, fluffy and absolutely delicious - I would even say these are the best ricotta hotcakes that I have ever had. They came with a bottle of maple syrup on the side so I proceeded to smother the hotcakes in the sweet syrup – heaven. The banana bread was not such a winner, being very dry and tasted quite floury as well.

The coffee probably wouldn't pass muster for an espresso connoisseur, but my latte did come with a little love heart so I was happy enough. If coffee is not your breakfast beverage of choice, Jenny's is renowned with locals for having the best fresh juices in the area.

Overall, the meals are great value and while the Banana Bread won't be a repeat, I will very likely come back again for the Ricotta Hotcakes. Service was friendly and efficient, and suited the laid back setting of this beachside neighbourhood.

If you can't get a table at Jenny's or want to try something different, check out Cafe Q or Pure Bronte Pistachio .
