Urban art in the green hills of Healesville
One of Australia's best modern artists, Jeffrey Smart, is currently on exhibition at Tarrawarra Museum of Art in the Yarra Valley. 'Master of Stillness: Jeffrey Smart paintings 1940 – 2011' covers a broad sweep of Smart's career, with more than 40 paintings curated by Barry Pearce, Emeritus Curator at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
Smart's urban landscapes, often hauntingly devoid of people, make a startling juxtaposition to the lush landscapes of Tarrawarra. This is an exhibition that should not be missed, and it continues Tarrawarra's long tradition of showcasing excellent Australian art in all its forms.
The exhibition ends on 31 March 2013, and there is likely to be a last-minute rush of people seeing this important collection of works, which include pieces loaned from all over Australia and overseas as well as five pieces from TarraWarra's own collection, so I recommend you go and see it before it's too late.
