The roots of rodeo in Australia go back to the 1800's, when drovers, cattlemen and horse breakers tested their expertise against one another. Traditional working skills still form the basis of the rodeo as we know it today, but with the flair of a mini Las Vegas modern day event, which is all set to hit the Gold Coast.
Jeep National Finals Rodeo will take place on the Gold Coast from Thursday 13 June to Sunday 16 June. After 12 months and over 100 rodeos across Australia, only the top 15 cowboys and cowgirls are invited to compete in the National Finals and competition is tough.
The event will be held at the GC Convention & Exhibition Centre, which will be transformed into Australia's largest indoor rodeo arena. The timeframe video of the arena set up shows all the work that goes on behind the scenes to make the event possible.
The NRF offers four days of action packed rodeo events. Check out the skills of the best rodeo riders in the country as the cowboys and cowgirls ride, rope and race their way through the finals. The bareback bronc requires skill, stamina and a dose of luck to stay on and the ladies barrel-racing sees horse and rider literally turning on the spot at speed. There's team roping to watch as well as bull riding and steer wrestling. I reckon there's a great opportunity here for physios on the Gold Coast to tend to the backs of the riders after the event.
If you have never been to a live rodeo event, here's your chance for a close up view. It's billed as family friendly. If it's a display of horse riding skills you are after, together with a taste of the outback right here on the coast, then you may wish to consider buying tickets for Outback Spectacular.
If you are a RACQ member, they are offering an NRF discount of a second adult ticket at half price (plus a service fee of $4.95). The Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights start at 6.45pm, ending at 9:30pm and there are also matinees over the weekend. Click here for session times. Tickets are available through Ticketec. Ticket prices vary due to silver, gold and platinum choices, as well as Family and Concession tickets. To purchase tickets, follow the link.
