If you’re looking to burn off Friday night beers or simply want that “walking on sunshine” weekend feeling, you can’t miss The Space dance school in Prahran. I mean, what could be a jazzier way to start your weekend than, erm, a jazz class?

Beginners jazz starts at 12.30pm on Saturday. Expect 60 minutes of fun, starting with a jazzy warm-up, strengthening exercises, corner work and turning practice, finished up with a routine worthy of inclusion in any Brittney Spears workshop. Teacher Bec Fairey brings bucket loads of enthusiasm to the class, which is sure to rub off.

If you’re feeling brave, or you’ve got a bit more dance experience under your belt, stick around until 1.30pm for the intermediate, 90-minute class. However, I’d recommend practicing in front of Rage for a good hour beforehand to make sure you’re in prime hip-shaking form.

Jazz dance has certainly evolved since the Madonna-inspired classes of the 1980s. Expect some different takes on this style – sometimes sexy, sometimes lyrical, sometimes emotive – but always energetic. And don’t feel scared off if you’re lacking an extra X chromosome – boys are more than welcome to jazz class.

Of course, if jazz isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other weekend classes at The Space. Try hip hop, breakin, contemporary, ballet or tap – you’re sure to find something on their timetable.
